Boys Volleyball Preview
Thursday, April 10, 2014
Newington
Coach: Curt Burns
Last year: 14-8, lost in Class L quarterfinals
Key losses: Tyler Wilgoos, Sasha Pokic, Thomas McConnell.
Key returnees: Riley McManus (sr. setter) Jordan Aprea (jr. OH) Jon Cloutier (sr. MH/MB), Bret Sullivan (jr. L), Flavio Lici (sr. MB), Nick Hinchcliffe (jr. OH), Connor Ericson (sr. OP), Long Du (sr. def.)
Outlook: The Indians have five starters back and fell back below the line to Class M, which they won in 2012. McManus was Class L all-state last year and had 600 assists last year, then spent the offseason playing club volleyball, something several players did this winter.
The other star is Aprea, who, has a 39-inch vertical leap to make up for his lack of height, but the Indians have plenty of it. Cloutier is only his second year in the sport but was all-CCC and is 6-foot-4, making him a force in the middle.
Du is the team’s closer on the service line, and the Indians hope to close out the season.
“Our goal is to win the Class M championship,” Burns said. “We’re not shying away from it, but we have to earn it by working hard for it.”
